Missouri and Kansas, circa 1859.
This particular scene is based off a short little passage in this book I read called “The Border Between Them: Violence and Reconciliation on the Kansas-Missouri Line.”
After years of bitter partisan fighting and a hard-to-break cycle of retaliatory attacks on both sides of the border, by the late 1850s, economic woes, a drought, widespread crop failures, the departure of John Brown, and the temporary silence of guerilla groups, led to an almost peaceful calm on the KS-MO border before the storm of the Civil War.
"By July 1859, things [on the border] had become so peaceful that Kansans and Missourians came together at an extraordinary Independence Day celebration held at the Custard farm south of Fort Scott."
So. It’s the Fourth of July, 1859, and KS and MO attempt to be civil to each other for just one day. That doesn’t mean they have to like it though. Not one bit.
But of course the worst is yet to come…
(haha this was like the only time MO was ever taller than KS. Only because she’s still a kid here.)
