Literature Text

Your name means beautiful
A golden ocean
Of grass
Swaying in the wind
As far as the eye can see
Until it meets
The sky
The beautiful
Endless
Azure
Sky
Slowly fading to sapphire
Rainbow clouds
As the sun sets
To the West
Turning the land as
Black as the soil in the ground
Twinkling stars shine
Across the heavens
Millions of points of light
Ad Astra per Aspera,

Your name means beautiful
But that was long ago
And beauty fades with age
Now you are
Rows of identical houses
As far as the eye can see
Dusty parking lots
Shopping malls
Infinite rows of streets
Filled with ghosts of the past
Discarded newspapers blowing across the highway
Like tumbleweeds
The smell of exhaust on the breeze
Trains
Just passing through
Headed to places far away
Mournful whistles carry through the night
I wonder
How many others
Have wanted one
To take them away
From this place
The stars still shine
In the midnight sky
But you wouldn't know
Through the haze
And the lights of this city
Ad Astra per Aspera
I actually wrote this several years ago, but I just found it again and still like it quite a bit. So...throwback!

Written for the state of Kansas. Specifically my city, Olathe.

(Oddly enough, way before my silly state obsession.)

Ad Astra Per Aspera means "To the stars through difficulties," and it's the Kansas state motto.

To the stars, look to the stars, whenever you're lonely or sad. When the world is unkind and the days are cold, when the weight of the world presses on your shoulders, look to the night sky and remember us, everyone who has come before.
