Description

From my Lawrence RP blog at ashestoimmortality.tumblr.com. It's a really fascinating city, at least IMO. Like it being the home of KU makes it interesting enough, but not every college town can claim the history that it has. It's most famous for Quantrill's Raid and being an antislavery city during Bleeding Kansas, but the more I've read about it, the deeper its history goes. Her history also includes plenty of violent racial tensions but also brave resistance, thriving industries based on the river, massive social movements during the 1960s, firebombings in response to Vietnam, and finally, an important role in the production of "The Day After," a film that has been credited with saving the real world from nuclear war by portraying just how bad it would be. And despite everything, the city just always seems so... happy and full of life. 3 things she loves: basketball, music, and learning.

Anyway, her human name is Leanora Douglas and she's pretty... well, in the present day she's a total hipster and social justice-y type blogger. This picture, however, would be from around 1918-ish, with an early incarnation of the Jayhawk mascot. She was definitely a bit dorkier and more bookish back in those days, and perhaps just a little less outspoken. She was still just as obsessed with basketball though. It's one of those activities that everyone participated in, no matter whether they were black or white, or men or women. It was just that popular.

Anyway, for some reason I just liked the way this turned out. I think it's because it perfectly captures her sort of cocky confidence (which often carries over into arrogance, but who can blame her? haha).
